VIN 9 Trans Identification

1983 - OZ, blue tag
1984 - OZ, yellow tag
1985 - OZ, pink tag
1986 - KZF, blue tag
1987 - KZF, yellow tag


VIN 9 cars use a 4 speed overdrive TH-2004r with different shift points due to different governors and also have a higher 2400RPM stall D5 converter (GM# 8653400 with CBBF on the paper tag, 2050RPM stall with 14 blade stator) than the stock VIN Y TH-2004r transmission.

There were two different Transmissions offerered for VIN 9 vehicles
1983-85 has code OZ on the trans tag while '86-'87 reads KZF. These transmissions have a wide open throttle shift point (WOT) of 4800rpm than the VIN Y TH2004R which has a WOT shift point of 3000rpm.

The gear ratios: 1st: 2.74, 2nd: 1.57, 3rd: 1.00 and 4th (OD): 0.67

Governor:
BRF, BQ and CZF GN/Monte SS TH2004Rs have WOT 1st gear 5200 rpm upshift governor, part#8655976, WOT 1st gear upshift on OZ and KZF Hurst/442 is 4800 rpm part# 8634982 vs. 3000 rpm stock.

Shift points:
BRF, BQ and CZF:
1-2: 5200 rpm
2-3: 4900 rpm
3-4: 4400 rpm
OZ and KZF:
1-2: 4800 rpm
2-3: 4500 rpm
3-4: 4000 rpm

Tag at the back of the trans on the passengers side by the tail shaft has this information.
Unless you have a 442 or Hurst these do not apply.
VIN Y cars had OG, OM or KCF.

BQ (86-87 GN), OZ (83-85 VIN9), CZF (Monte SS), KZF (86-87 VIN9) and BRF(84-85 GN) are the good ones.
