  • A.I.R. Injection Tubing Question

I am going to have to replace or repair the AIR tube that leads from the valve nearest the firewall on the right side down to the converter. I see a few options, one getting the complete tube, another is getting a repair kit. Here's a link for what it looks like, if your not familiar with it. If you are, is it worth the trouble, or would you recommend another solution?

    http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Converter-Air-Tube-Kit---Universal-for-Replacement-Converters-Walker_18370494-P_688_R|GRPEXHAAMS_____

Let me know what you think. I could remove the AIR system, but that might be more trouble (we don't have inspection here, BTW).

I'd just replace the tube, its easier than removing and plugging eveything.
Also the AIR system injects air into the exhaust ports to ease startup which means the O2 sensor might be affected but Im not 100% since the O2 sensor might not provide mixture feedback until its warmed up and in a closed loop. It also injects air into the CAT to aid in the catalyst reaction during warm operation.
I know my 85 442 is missing the AIR setup and has rich startups but I believe the choke is suspect... who knows with these cars though, theyre very sensitive to emissions control.

Yep, that's what I'll do. I found one at Rockauto...think this will work:

They have another one there that is AC Delco, but I don't think it's the right one...tried cross-referencing it and came up with a Buick part. Fun part about this will be getting it in place...removing the old one was no fun

      Thanks for the help!

If you type in the part number into google other sources msy come up.

I found other sources, but the one from Rockauto seemed the best match...I only found one other place that was cheaper, but I've not tried them yet. Went ahead and ordered it from Rockauto. Should be fun installing it. BTW, I did find another parts place that lists a lot of Olds parts, GM Parts East. Unfortunately, they, like most, don't carry a lot of hard to find parts. They do have a nice listing, though, with a lot of exploded views of the different areas. Would be nice if more of these parts were available.

Engine is out, and the cleanup/rebuild is starting. Looking at the AIR setup, I wonder if I would have trouble with ECM codes if I bypassed (jumped the terminals) at the plug for the electric switching valve, eliminating the AIR altogether. If I ever went with a different engine, say a 403, I would not have the AIR setup, so I would have to bypass that anyway if I used the CCC. I'm just not sure how it would run with the switch bypassed.

BTW, glad to see the forum back up and running! Great resource! Glad to see you back.

The check engine light will not come on if the AIR system is not hooked up.
At least its not coming o in my '85 442.

Both tubes are badly rusted...I'll have to replace both. The tubes run from $20-$37. Not sure if it is worth putting the money into them.

May just plug the holes and see how it does.

                Thanks for the info!

It all depends on the level of restoration you are going for, if you are going to be just driving the car I would just plug them.

I do intend to drive the car, and take it to car shows and cruise in's. I intend to have some fun with it (might even consider a bigger engine if the 307 doesn't have enough power). I can always put the tubes back on if I need to get it back to original. For now, I just anxious to get the 307 done and everything put back together so I can drive it.
