  • 442 Carb spec s

Hi im new to this forum. I have a 77 Cutlass. I am in the procces of buying a 86 Olds 442. Burg on Burg with the t tops. Clean car but the carb is in bad shape and want to know more info on these 4 bbl Rochester carbs. Its all stock but the guy said it needs a rebuild. Whats the differance between the regular 307 vin Y and the vin 9 carb. Does any one have the specs on the vin 9 carb. Thanks will post pics this weekend.

Im not sure there is any difference between the vin 9 & vin Y carbs... I am by no means the expert & I'm sure others will chime in... Congrats on your new purchase! I would love to see pics of the new 86' & the 77' while you are at it! & what are your plans fir them?

The difference is minimal, basically the Idle Load Compensator was a solinoid kicked on by the AC whereas the VIN Ys was vacuum operated.

I have 4 86-87 VIN 9 carbs and each has different secondary rods and hangars.
Each carb is fine tuned to the motor, hence why the idle mixture screws are sealed.
Most think messing with those does something but they're mistaken, only effects idle which in the end is still managed by the MCS.
The idle circuit changed over the years, the effect is not the same as the carbs from the 60's and early 70's
Also, VIN Y and 9 motors use the same computer and proms in 86-87.
Cams and springs are the only feature on the top end that are different, more fuel is needed in the 9 but its miniscule, also the primary rods are potentially different but I doubt it...in the end the mixture is still controlled by the computer.

Air valves are set differently from Y to 9, Y doesnt open all the way and 9 does like a typical quadrajet. I've also heard 9's came with K hangers and CV rods which is also what I have in mine. Y's had DD rods which are very lean.

I have several VIN9 '87 442 carbs and they all have different hangers, haven't gotten as far as to check the rods buy I can confirm my 87 442 has CV rods and I've seen DD rods on Y carbs.
I heard that the hangers were meant to fine tune each carb and that changing to a different hanger I.E. H to F to raise the rods up more doesn't necessarly increase performance.
