  • 1984 Hurst Olds Aero Comemmorative

Just picked up this little gem for my next project, 1984 Hurst Olds Aero Commemorative with a rare Sunroof option:

I am working on freshening up the interior, was in ok shape before... found a bunch of interior items from a 53,xxx mile Regal and had some mint/NOS stuff lying around.

Next is the paint and under hood, I want to paint back to the original color scheme/trim/lighting and remove the trim from the wheels and blackout them out with RWL tires, not sure if I want to have chrome with the body kit. Should look something like this when done minus the W25 hood and chrome rims:

Replaced the carpet, seat belts, console and seats in my '84 Hurst with stuff from a low mile car.
Also cut out the console for Lightning Rods.

Was it ever registered with Cars & Concepts as an Aero commemorative?

        Comment

        • #5
No because Cars & Concepts had nothing to do with Aero Commemorative's.
The kits came from Action Products, a company that is owned by Jack "Doc" Watson and the kit had to be installed by the car owner.
Roughly 160 kits were made and 100 kits were sold with the remainder being used for parts and most kits that were sold came with an H/OCA membership.
I have no history on this car as to when it was installed but my guess it was installed in the early '90's since the emblems are pretty worn and it looks like it's seen some weather.

My guess with this car is that it received the kit between '88 and '93 and was at that time painted white to match the '88 prototype along with having the blackout trim replaced with chrome and then driven daily till the motor blew up, parted of the shifter, driveline, parked for 5 years and then another driveline was installed, hurst ratched shifter etc. and then daily driven for 10 more years.
I need to check the date on the title for when the last owner received it and also get the information from H/OCA on the original owner and perhaps I can get some information from them if they are still around.

I finished the interior, just need to freshen up the headliner, visors and upper door panels with the NOS Maple material I have and install the NOS dash and door trim.
For Hurst Olds day I touched up the exterior a bit, there is still more work to do to get it to where I want it but for the most part it's a 10 footer
The white with black out grilles/headlight/tailight and reverse lights is growing on me a little... I want to black out the window trim next and possibly the hood scoop and rear wing.
One thing is for certain I definitely need some bigger and wider wheels for this car since the kit makes the wheels sit in too far... oh and lose the ricer exhaust tips too.

Good lookin' progress Mike! I sure was jealous when I heard what a deal you got on that thing...
I never really noticed how the aero kit makes the wheels look so small until you mentioned it... now it's all I see! lol

Thanks Blake, it doesn't look bad in person but I noticed it in the photos and it bothered me.
I have my 255's on 84 H/O rims that I am going to pop on there, I think the reason they sit to far in is the fact that the backspacing on these 15x7's are 4.25" and not 4".
Not sure if that makes a difference at all but I am going to have some fun and swap them out to see how much better they look.
I might even consider a 3/8" to 1/2" spacer on the rears as well to keep the painted 15x7s.
I'll post some photos this weekend.

That car looks nice. Wish I could get lightening rods and make them work with a rev manual vb on the 200-4R. Im going back to the original KZF trans that came out of my 442 but with a rev man valvebody. I've begun to make everything as original or stock looking as possible lately.

I dismantled the front end to restore the engine bay last winter and it was just too dam cold to do anything at the shop even with space heaters.
I am completely restoring the engine bay to factory original and installing the correct TH2004R OZ trans and 8.5" 3.73 posi rear.
It was too cold to paint the rebuilt VIN9 307 or clean up the engine bay as well...84ho1.jpg84ho.jpg

Finished dismantling the front end the other day and power washed the engine bay.
Next step is to remove the dash and AC unit, brake booster and start wire wheeling everything.

Started to remove the ground kit as well, I come to find that someone put some serious money into installing the kit and it's been on there for quite some time... my guess late 80s.
Someone took the time to strip all the paint off the body and paint the car GM white.
It was painted again at a later date white again but more of an Artic white.

Everything stripped and ready for paint.
Ordered Medium Silver WA8536 from http://www.paintscratch.com to paint the firewall and see how good their products are.
Does anyone have the paint code for the frame and inner sheetmetal?20141207_155806.jpg20141207_155757.jpg

very nice! Excited to see how it turns out. maybe I missed it above, but are you reinstalling the 8I hurst aero kit? How difficult are those to install? does it take someone versed in auto body or can any back yard mechanic do it? I have heard that the panels on the door require drilling but the rest bolts on?

I might reinstall it, not sure.
Definitely not for the amateur bodyman to install thats for sure.

Ok...I was offered a chance to buy one in 'like new' condition & I'm not sure if I am going to. If I had multiple Olds like you 88HurstOlds, I would for sure want at least one Hurst Aero car!

it was described to me that most of the pieces bolt on & the door pieces are usually screwed on? I probably have to decide asap if I want to buy it...
