  • New From Chicago

Hey every body I am new here, let me give you the history about my cutlass. I have a 1978 Cutlass its silver with red interior and has the 260 v8. It has about 145,000 miles on it and has been in my family since first purchase. It was first owned by my grandfather when he passed in the early 90's he gave it to my dad. It just kind of sat in our drive way but for some reason it was my favorite car my parents owned and my parents had some cool cars My dad had and 82 capri 5.0 and my mom just got a 95 SHO. I could not even drive yet but i loved washing this car cleaning the chrome and making those white walls shine. Me and my brother shared the the car while we were in high school the car was still in mint condition. My brother went off to college and she was all mine I used to love riding around the streets of Chicago with my friends even though i think a geo metro was faster. The only way I could smoke the tires was with the help of some bleach When I went off to college I got a silver 84 5.0 carb mustang with a 93 body convertion and my brother took the cutlass. This is when she took a turn for the worse my brother knew nothing about cars and liked to run into stuff. One time he called me and said she was making a bad ticking noise. I asked him when was the last time he changed the oil and he said about 30,000 miles ago. Bless the man he thought it was 30,000 not 3,000. One head job late she was back on the road. the car has been in several states of disrepair since my brother has had it but now it is coming back to me. he just had a kid and is sick of moving it two blocks every month just to keep it running. I have big plans for this great car and i was really excited to find a site that is dedicated to the Gbody cutty. The body has little rust but I need to fix all the damage my brother caused. front fender needs replaced door needs replaced needs new vinyle top the list goes on. Motor is tired, trans is tired, rearend is shot. Lucky for me my buddy owns an 88 SS with 50,000 miles he is making it into a race car he has a 7.5 with a 373 posi he will give me if I help him take is out. Interior is a wreck and she needs new chrome pieces. This is going to be one heck of a project with many part hunting journeys ahead of me. Good thing I used to be a auto painter/restorer and am currently a mechcanic or i think she would be going to a crusher because the funds are going to be very limited. I am still waiting to take delivery from my brother but when he gets the car here I will post some before picks so you all can see the task that is ahead of me. I am pumped to get this back to like new/better then new condition. these 78's are beautiful, much over looked cars and there should be way more on the road. I will be looking forward to talking to you guys and getting advice from those who have more knowledge of these cars and where to get parts then I do. I have been a ford guy for most of my life currently own a 02 Roush stage one mustang and am new to the GM tech world. Thanks to who ever started this website.

Welcome to the site, great to hear you are saving the '78, you have by far the best color combo for that year.
    Good luck with the project!

Thanks man. I see your from Illinois do you know of any junk yards that might have any 78's that I could get parts from. I know most don't keep cars that old or would my best bet be Craig's list or ebay.

Junk yards are basically void of anything earlier than 1990 around here.
Craigslist or eBay is your best bet.

                Welcome!
I too have a 78, currently out of commission in the process of repairing the roof top under the vinyl (will I ever finish:icon13. The78-80's are great cars and unappreciated. Parts are hard to come by. The parts that came off my car are usually better than the junk yard parts. Ebay is your best bet, but even then sometimes, the prices are on the high side.

I have a really hard time finding trim pieces and detail parts. When I do come across parts that are in good shape they are very expensive. It seems 78-80 are the forgotten years.

Well I have been talking to a few buddies who are into gbody cars and they seem to know of a few guys who might have a lot of parts from 78-80 cars that they had in the past. So i guess I am just going to have to be a detective and find the parts I need In peoples basements and garages. The junk yards out here dont have cars past 90.
