  • Hello

Hi, just bought my first Olds this past Sat. 1986 Cutlas Supreme Salon Coupe, 36,413 original miles from the original owner. Me and the wife are avid car collectors and found this gem by accident. We are in the Grand Rapids Mi area.

Very cool... What other types of cars do you have? & how did you run across this particular Cutlass? I may be wrong but I believe in 86 they offered a Supreme & a Salon, which were 2 different models, the Salon being the higher end version... Although you could have probably ordered a Supreme with similar options back then... No biggie, just letting you know you... Any plans for the car or gonna leave it all original? Will it be driven regularly or rarely? Just curious... & welcome to the site!

Welcome welcome, and enjoy that Salon. I currently have a 86 Supreme AND a 86 Salon, building one out of the best of the two (Supreme is a T-top). Post pics if you get a chance and ask away if you have any Q's of your own, lots of people here who have been around these cars for years:icon14:

I will post pics as soon as I get a new camera, mine crapped out about a week ago! This car, as with most of my cars found me. Friend of a friend e-mailed me, told me about it. They past my name to the guy, he called and asked me to come take a look. The rest is pretty much history!

As for what I am going to do...I am torn. I love to drive my cars, but a 307 powered, 2.14 geared, 3 speed Cutlass does not excite me that much...I have located a couple of 3.73 rear ends, looking for a complete 200R4 assembly (trans, cables, cable brackets, x-member, drive shaft) so I may swap these in. As for the engine I will not alter this set up in the car....if I do, I'll pull everything out by the roots and replace it with a 5.3 / 4L60E set up, cheap, easy and fun.

Driving wise, I really want to keep the miles down on this one. All of our cars are drivers, and most have well over 100,000 on them. I prefer non perfect cars so we can enjoy them.

Last but not least our cars, please understand that I am not bragging or boasting. We started collecting at a young age, we have no children and share a common love for autos, some of our cars were inherited too.

2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT-2 (230,000 miles and counting)

So there you have em, some day I'd love to have a museum to put them in. That way people could see them and appreciate them the way we do.

Nice, so you are building the T-top then right? I am excited to drive my car with the tops out, I have never owned T-top car before. What drive train are you going to put in it?

That is one heck of a list.... & that is awesome that you drive them! & you are right, a 307 with those gears isn't gonna take off very quick... I think a fuel injected Vortec motor would be a nice addition, I started reseching that swap for another car & it seems like the cost is reasonable for the amount of power & reliability you get in return....

Vortec engines have gotten VERY expensive around here, about $1200 for something with 150,000 miles on it. I can grab a 5.3 or 6.0 for about $500 with under 100K on it. Either way you go not a bad swap and lots of power!

Thanks about our list, we enjoy them!

Aren't some of the 5.3 & 6.0's considered a Vortec....My 2003 silverado has a 5.3 Vortec or 5300 Vortec it says in the manual....That's what I was thinkin of...I've seen some out of wrecked trucks for $300-$1200.... some with the trannys included...

Yes, the body will be the T, which was actually a Brougham car with T's ordered or something I guess. So I will swap the stuff I like from the Salon into it, including the 305/200r4 2.73 combo for now. I have the same thinking on the motor, when I do it, it will be fuel injected in the 300hp range.
I had a 410hp motor in the T at one time but, long story short, I enjoyed that but I decided I wanted something with more street manners.
Been a slow learning curve for me, lol

That's quite a list of cars! I love my kids (their Mother not so much) but that list sure has my wheels turning. Maybe one day I can meet a real car loving babe
